Faster than the Speed of Light

By admin | August 17, 2007

It appears that 2 German scientists have performed an experiment that breaks Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. In this case they got photons (light) to move faster than the speed of light.

Er?

Yeah, that’s pretty much a head-scratcher. Supposedly, nothing can move faster than the speed of light. If you could, you’d end up travelling through time, and affecting causality (changing the past or future). The fabric of space and time would tear apart, the universe would implode, and all that would be left is this blog.

The scientists were investigating a phenomenon called quantum tunnelling, which allows sub-atomic particles to break apparently unbreakable laws. The scientists measured microwave photons traveling in between prisms. Most light particles were reflected, and others weren’t. The ones that weren’t reflected traveled a further distance, but arrived back at the same time as the reflected light particles.

Hmmm. How’s that for a science project?
