Brutally Honest Movie Reviews
By admin | August 15, 2007
Times have changed. Hollywood no longer cares about putting out quality products anymore. In the past, a movie had to have a purpose. In the past, Hollywood used to connect with the viewers. Today, the studios believe that big explosions and computer generated imagery (CGI) will sell their product. You and I are just a number. Sure some of these films are fun to watch, but think about it – how many of them are memorable? How many of them would you pay to see again, if you had to do it all over again?
The solution to problem is three-fold. To get the power back into your court, you need to follow these three basic premises:
1. Ignore television advertisements hyping the latest movies
2. Use common sense
3. Seek an opinion of a critic that resonates with your tastes
Point one is an often overlooked choice. Advertisers know that people can be manipulated into doing things they normally wouldn’t do. To this end they make flashy commercials to grab your attention. Pretty women and men, large explosions and fantastic locales are all used to entice you to the theater. You’ll notice they don’t mention whether there is even a worthwhile story to go along with all. Therefore, it is important for you to remain skeptic of anything being fed to you in print ads or on television.
Point two is another equally important way to get control back. If the film seems too good be true, it probably is. Avoid any movies that seem questionable to you or your family. Hollywood hopes that people forget they have the ability to question what they see, read and hear. What corporation wants an informed consumer? None! An informed buyer wants a better product for their money. It can all be summed up with this simple sentence: think before you spend.
Point three is the hardest to put into action. It requires a bit of legwork. Many critics nowadays are actually employed by movie studios. It is a conflict of interest. They give good reviews to movies so they can earn a paycheck or get themselves invited to the latest movie premiere. Your interests are not their concern. But there’s movie critics out there who don’t sing to the tune of the movie studios. You can find them at The Critical Critics. No nonsense, brutally honest movie reviews made from the perspective of the viewer. Check them out or conduct your own exhaustive search.
Just to recap – there are several things within your power to ensure a good movie going experience. Implementing the three I’ve outlined above will set you in the right direction. Remember, the choice is yours, don’t let the establishment make your mind up for you.
